Reel requirements
Please note that a Reel needs to follow these requirements:
- Duration: Between 3 seconds and 15 minutes
- Dimensions: Maximum 1080 × 1920 pixels (9:16 aspect ratio)
Creating a Reel
Navigate to your Instagram page in Planable and click the blue Compose button. Select Reel as the content type, then choose to schedule it for later or publish it immediately. You can always identify a Reel by the icon in the bottom-left corner of the post preview.
Thumbnail for Instagram Reels
Planable lets you set a custom thumbnail for your Reel. You can upload an image from your computer or media library, or select a frame directly from the video.
Add audio to a Reel
Add trending music or trending original sounds to a Reel straight from Planable, instead of finishing the Reel in the Instagram app.
- Open the Reel in the composer, the feed, or the post modal.
- Click Add audio on the caption toolbar row, then Select audio.
- In the audio picker, choose a tab: Music for trending tracks, or Original audio for trending original sounds from other creators.
- Search for a track and preview music tracks on your video. For original sounds, click Listen on Instagram to hear them on Instagram.
- Pick the audio, then use the two sliders to set the mix: Audio volume starts at 80 and Video volume starts at 50.
The selected audio shows on the Reel in the feed and the post modal, so teammates and clients reviewing the Reel can see it.
Good to know: Planable doesn't edit your video file. The chosen audio and the two volume levels are sent to Instagram when the Reel is published, and Instagram makes the final mix. The preview in Planable is a close guide, not an exact copy of the result.
What you need to add audio
- The Instagram page must be connected through Facebook. Pages connected with Instagram login see a prompt to reconnect via Facebook instead of the audio picker.
- The Reel must publish directly. Audio can't be picked when the Reel is set to publish through the Instagram app or mobile notifications.
- You need permission to edit or publish in the workspace. Users who can only view or approve see the selected audio but can't open the picker.
- Audio is for Reels only. Feed posts, carousels and Stories don't get audio.
Audio limitations
- The picker shows the trending music and original sounds Instagram shares with Planable. Your favorites, saved audio and the full in-app library are only available in the Instagram app.
- Both volume sliders go from 1 to 100, so neither the audio nor the video can be fully muted from Planable.
💡 Pro tip: If Instagram can't attach the audio when the Reel publishes (for example, because the page lost its Facebook connection), the Reel still goes live with its original sound only, and no error is shown. If a Reel was published without the audio you picked, check the page connection first.
Publishing Reels
Note: Filters, stickers and other in-app effects can't be added from Planable. Apply them in the Instagram app by publishing through the Planable mobile app.
From your Instagram Page Settings, you can choose to publish Reels directly to Instagram or via the Planable mobile app. Publishing through the mobile app lets you open the Reel in Instagram to add audio from your saved or favorite sounds, stickers, and other effects before it goes live. Audio picked in Planable is only applied when the Reel publishes directly.
