What the AI caption generator does

Most captions start with the visual. You've got the image, you know roughly what you want to say, and you'd rather not stare at an empty composer to find the first line.

The AI caption generator reads the media you've uploaded and drafts a caption based on what's actually in it. It's one of several AI actions in the composer, the difference is that this one starts from your visual rather than from a prompt or from your previous posts.

It's part of the composer for everyone. There's no add-on to buy and nothing to switch on.

Good to know: Nothing the AI writes goes anywhere on its own. Every caption is shown to you first, and it only enters the composer when you click Apply — where you can still edit it like any other text. AI never publishes a post for you.

Generate a caption from your media

Open the composer and upload your media, or pick it from the Media Library.
Click Generate caption.
The AI drafts a caption based on what it sees in your media.
Not quite right? Click Retry for a different version.
Happy with it? Click Apply to drop it into the composer, then edit as you like.

You can regenerate as many times as you need before applying anything — retrying doesn't touch your existing caption.

There's a thumbs up and thumbs down next to the result. Using them genuinely helps — it's how the team sees which kinds of captions land and which don't.

Uploaded more than one image?

Carousels work too. The AI looks at all the images, not just the first one. If they tell one story, you get one caption about that story. If they're clearly different subjects, the caption tends to cover each image in turn, so you may end up with a list.

💡 Pro tip: If a mixed carousel gives you a list you don't want, generate the caption with just the hero image first, apply it, then add the rest of the media. You'll get one focused caption instead of a point per slide.

Make captions sound like your brand

A caption that describes your image accurately but sounds nothing like you is still a caption you have to rewrite. This is the single biggest thing you can do about that: fill in Brand context.

Brand context is a living brand document in your workspace settings. Once it's filled in, Planable's AI reads it automatically every time it writes — including when it generates a caption from your media. You don't attach it to a post or mention it in a prompt. It just applies.

It's pre-structured into six sections, and each one changes the caption in a different way:

Brand context section	What it changes in your captions
Company description	Stops the AI guessing what you do from the picture alone. A photo of a team at a laptop could be a software company, a coworking space or a recruiter — this is what tells it which.
Products & services	Lets the AI name the thing in the screenshot correctly instead of describing it generically.
Tone of Voice	The biggest lever on how the caption reads — playful or measured, first person or brand voice, emoji or no emoji.
Brand Values	Keeps the angle consistent — what you choose to highlight about the same image.
Approved Terminology	Gets your feature names, product spelling and house wording right — and keeps the words you've banned out.
Audience	Pitches the caption at the right reader, so the same image gets a different framing for practitioners than for executives.

To fill it in, open Workspace settings → Brand context (it's also on the clipboard icon in the nav header, and in the workspace menu on your dashboard). Entries save as you type. Owners, Admins and Editors can edit it; the rest of the team can view it.

Good to know: Brand context is per workspace. If you run several brands or clients, each one gets its own — so the same image uploaded in two workspaces produces two differently-voiced captions, with nothing to switch between. Keep it concise: the AI reads up to 4,000 characters, so a tight brief beats a long one.

💡 Pro tip: Be specific about what you don't want. "No exclamation marks, never call users 'guys', avoid the word 'seamless'" does more for a caption than three paragraphs describing your tone in the abstract — and Approved Terminology is the right place to put it.

What the AI takes into account

Beyond your media and your Brand context, a few things shape the caption automatically:

The platform's character limit. Captions are generated to fit the channel you're posting to, so you don't get a draft that's too long for Threads or Pinterest. The same applies to Rewrite and Make it shorter.
The language of your content. The AI follows the language you're already writing in rather than defaulting to English. Planable's interface is English-only, but your posts don't have to be.
Your workspace, not your history. Caption generation starts from the media in front of it. If you'd rather generate from your past posts, that's a different action — Generate from posts — which needs at least 5 existing posts in the workspace.

Hashtags and ALT text

Two things people expect to come out of caption generation, but which are their own actions:

Generate hashtags — a separate button in the composer's AI panel. Review the suggestions and add them in one click. Available on every channel except TikTok. Instagram and Facebook cap out at 30 hashtags, Threads at 1. Note that this action doesn't use Brand context, since it's matching topic rather than voice.
ALT text — described for accessibility, not for readers, so it's generated separately from the caption. Use Generate with AI in the ALT text field, or set it once on the asset in your Media Library. See AI in the composer for more.
